The crystal model was created using Boolean, scatter and pyro nodes for the crystal growths. I also created a shatter effect within the bigger crystals.
As this was my first time using materialX I spent quite a bit of time become accustomed to the material nodes by playing with the controls and trying to recreate simple materials.
Houdini Node Setup
I Iterated upon the Painite material by playing around with emission channels and internal lights as to highlight the shattered interiors of the crystals.

This was a material assignment I did inside Houdini using materialX. The brief was to create two materials; one main material that went with the model and then another material which contrasted against the model.
